Shutdown Windows Faster : Change the kill time of system processes

Are you facing problems with your system shutdown speed?
If your computer waits for a long time before shutting down...its because of the processes running in the background which take time to stop.
How about changing the wait time of these processes manually so that they shut down faster?

Here are a few registry tweaks which may help you in doing this. This tweak will work on almost all versions of MS Windows.
But before doing this...be very careful. You are going to edit the mighty windows registry!
Here we go...

You can go to the registry editor in windows in the following way.
Go to Start ->Run and the type 'regedit'.

Now you can perform the following tweaks to make your system shutdown process faster.

A. The first tweak is to reduce the wait time for services which are stopped at system shutdown

Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control
On the right side, double click on ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’. Change the default value of WaitToKillServiceTimeout of 20000 to a lesser value, such as 5000.

This will reduce the wait time for services to be stopped. Hence it will force a kill command to the service much earlier than before.

B. The next tweak is to reduce the wait time for user processes and applications to be killed

Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop

On the right side, double click on WaitToKillAppTimeout  and enter a new value less than the default value of 20000.
The value can be 1000 or 5000 or any other numeric value, depending on your preference. This will reduce the wait time for user processes and they will also be killed earlier.

On the right side also, double click on HungAppTimeout and change the value to a lesser numerical value. e.g. 1000.
HungAppTimeout specifies how long the system waits for user processes to end after the user clicks the End Task command button in Task Manager or after the user has selected to restart or shutdown the system.

Then navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\ registry key, and perform the same tweaks again.

C. Finally, Set the system to automatically end, terminate and kill user processes or tasks on shutdown or logoff.

When system shuts down, if a process is hung, it asks to manually end it and provides the user a end task dialog box. By changing the value of registry key AutoEndTasks to 1, we can set the system to end automatically all processes that timeout when shut down or log out from Windows. The default value of this key is 0.

AutoEndTasks is located at the following registery key,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop registry branch.

We are through!!!
Now, restart your system and enjoy a faster shutdown. Please back up your registery before performing these tweaks, it will be a good idea. If  there is any mishap, you can always restore your registry to the default. Hope you'll like this tweak. Happy computing!!!
